Your central air system will be either in your attic or in your basement. Once you find your central air system, the filter slot will be between the return air duct (the air intake) and the furnace.

If there is a filter in the slot that looks to fit well, mark down the measurement listed in bold type along the leading edge of the filter. The filter may have to be removed to find the dimension markings. If there are no markings, you may have to measure the length, width and depth with a measuring tape.
